The Student File Explained: How Bangladeshis Actually Send Tuition Abroad

Here is a thing nobody explains until it becomes urgent. You have the offer letter, you have the money, and you still cannot simply walk into a bank and wire tuition to a university abroad. Bangladesh controls outward foreign currency, and the route students use is called a student file.

Most students discover this about ten days before a deadline. Do not be that student.

What it actually is

Standard Chartered describes it plainly on their own site: a student file is the mechanism through which Bangladeshi citizens convert taka to meet education expenses for studying abroad. Open one and the bank can send tuition and living expenses to your university or to you, within the rules, on an ongoing basis.

Think of it as an authorised channel rather than a product. Without it, your money is stuck in taka in Bangladesh while your university's deadline runs down.

Which banks do it

Most of the large banks run this service. Standard Chartered, BRAC Bank, Eastern Bank, United Commercial Bank and AB Bank all publish student file pages, and there are others.

They differ on how fast they are, what they charge, and how much handholding you get. If you already bank somewhere and the relationship is good, start there. If the branch has never opened one before, go somewhere that does them routinely, because an inexperienced branch will cost you weeks.

When to open it

Standard Chartered's own guidance says to start as soon as you have the offer letter. That is the right instinct and we would go slightly further: start the conversation with the bank while you are still waiting on the offer, so you know their document list in advance.

The sequence that works is offer letter, then student file, then tuition payment, then visa application. Students who leave the file until after the visa interview end up paying rush fees or missing an intake entirely.

Documents you will be asked for

Exact lists vary by bank, so treat this as a packing list rather than gospel. Expect to need the admission or offer letter from the university, the university's fee structure or demand note showing what is owed, your passport, your academic certificates and transcripts, the usual account-opening paperwork for you and whoever is funding you, and evidence of where the money came from.

That last item is the one that trips people up, and it is the same problem visa officers care about. Which is convenient, because the documents you gather for the bank are largely the documents you will need for the visa.

One detail from Standard Chartered's page worth knowing: a student file can be opened for a defined list of course types, and anything outside that list needs prior Bangladesh Bank approval. If you are doing something unusual, ask about this early rather than assuming.

The overlap with your visa file

Treat these as one job, not two. The bank wants to know the money is real and traceable. The visa officer wants to know the money is real, traceable, and has been sitting still long enough.

So when you assemble bank statements, source-of-funds evidence and your sponsor's documents, make one clean set and use it for both. Keep the dates consistent across everything. A salary figure that appears one way on the bank paperwork and another way in the visa file is the kind of small contradiction that turns into a refusal.

What it costs and how long it takes

This is where we stop giving you numbers, deliberately. Charges, processing times and remittance limits differ by bank and get revised, and a figure we publish today could be wrong by the time you read it. Anyone quoting you an exact fee on a blog post is guessing.

Ask two or three banks directly, in the same week, and compare. Ask specifically about the file opening charge, the per-transfer charge, and how many working days a transfer takes once the file is live.

The mistakes we see most

Leaving it until after the visa. The file takes as long as it takes, and no bank hurries because your intake is close.

Opening it in the wrong person's name. If your uncle is funding you, the paperwork has to reflect that relationship properly rather than money appearing from nowhere.

Assuming the agency handles it. Some help, but the file is between you, your bank and Bangladesh Bank. Your name is on it. Know how it works.

Paying tuition into an agency's personal account because it is faster. It is faster right up until it is gone.

Where we come in

We walk students through this every intake and we know which branches move quickly and which ones will lose your file in a drawer. We will also tell you what to collect before you go, so you are not making four trips.

Bank rules and limits change, so message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what the banks are actually asking for this month rather than what a blog said last year.
