You've got the offer. Two hurdles left: the student visa, and actually getting yourself ready to leave. Both look bigger than they are once you break them down. Here's the full run-through.
The student visa
Refusals almost always trace back to two things: gaps in the documents, or a shaky interview. Fix those two and your odds jump.
Here's what you'll typically need:
- The admission or offer letter from your university.
- Financial proof: bank statements, sponsor letters, or a blocked account for some countries.
- Passport, photos, and the visa application form.
- English test or MOI, where it's required.
- A clear, consistent visa SOP explaining your intent.
Requirements differ from country to country, so build the file the way that embassy wants it, not as one generic bundle.
Interview prep
Not every country interviews students. Where they do, and the US is the obvious one, preparation is the whole ball game. Practise clear, honest answers about your course, why you chose that university, your finances, and your plans after you graduate. Do enough mock interviews that the real one feels like a repeat.
Pre-departure checklist
Once the visa is approved, work through this before you fly:
- Money: forex, an international card, and enough to cover your first month.
- Connectivity: a local SIM or eSIM sorted before or right after you land.
- Accommodation: locked in for at least your first few weeks.
- Documents: printed and digital copies of everything (offer, visa, insurance, financial papers).
- Health: insurance, prescriptions, and any required vaccinations.
- Arrival: airport pickup, or a clear route to your accommodation.
What to pack
Keep it light. You can buy most things once you arrive. The essentials are a documents folder (originals plus copies), clothes for the actual weather where you're going, a universal power adapter and your key electronics, a small supply of any medicine you rely on, and a little local currency for day one.
Your first week
Register with your university, open a local bank account, collect your student ID, and learn your route to campus. Get the basics sorted fast and you can put your head down and study.
