Not everyone needs IELTS to study abroad. A lot of universities will take an MOI letter instead, which is proof that you were taught in English. If that's you, it can save real time and money. Here's how it works and where it holds.
What an MOI letter is
MOI stands for Medium of Instruction. The letter is an official note from your school or college saying your studies were taught and examined in English. For students from English-medium backgrounds in Bangladesh, it can stand in for an English test at many universities.
Where MOI is accepted
It's most common in Malaysia, where a large number of universities take an MOI letter and many that don't will run their own English placement test instead. A growing number of US universities are MOI-friendly or test-flexible for eligible applicants too. And some universities elsewhere accept it case by case.
One catch worth repeating: acceptance depends on the university and the specific program. A letter that works for one course may not work for another, so confirm before you count on it.
When you still need IELTS
For Australia, the UK and most of Europe, plan on IELTS or an equivalent, both for the university and often for the visa. Even where MOI covers admission, some countries still want a test at the visa stage. If you do need it, aim for the exact band your target universities require rather than guessing high and stressing yourself out.
MOI or IELTS: which is smarter?
If you qualify for MOI and your targets accept it, use it. You save the test fee and weeks of prep. But IELTS keeps every door open, including countries and universities that won't take MOI, and it can unlock IELTS-linked scholarships. For a lot of students the best move is to shortlist MOI-accepted universities first, then sit IELTS only if the plan actually needs it.
