Study in Canada from Bangladesh: Permits, Proof of Funds and Working

Canada sits at the top of a lot of Bangladeshi wish lists, usually for one reason: the path from student to permanent resident is clearer there than almost anywhere else. That reputation is deserved. It is also why the bar at the front door is high, and why a lot of our students are better served applying somewhere else first.

Here is the honest version.

The money Canada expects to see

This is where most people underestimate it. For a single applicant, Canada asks you to show CAN$23,448 a year in living costs, and that figure sits on top of your tuition and your airfare rather than including them.

If you are bringing family, it scales. Two people, CAN$29,192. Three, CAN$35,888. Four, CAN$43,572. Each extra person beyond seven adds CAN$6,318.

Add a year of tuition to that and you can see why Canada filters hard on finances. A student whose family can comfortably fund Malaysia may simply not be a Canadian applicant this year, and it is better to hear that in our office than from a refusal letter.

Your institution has to be on the list

Canada only issues study permits for a designated learning institution, a DLI. Every province publishes its list, and the college you were shown in a glossy brochure is either on it or your permit was never going to be approved.

Check the DLI number yourself before you pay anybody anything. This one check kills most of the fraudulent offers circulating in Dhaka.

Working while you study

You can work up to 24 hours per week off campus during your study terms, and full time during scheduled breaks. You need a social insurance number, and there is no fee to have the work condition added to your permit if you are eligible.

Read that as help with living costs, not as a funding plan. Students who arrive counting on part-time work to cover tuition get into trouble fast, and the visa officer assessing your file is specifically testing whether you have the money without it.

Why Bangladeshi applications get refused

Three reasons come up over and over.

Money that does not hold up. Canada looks at the same things everyone else does: whether the funds are genuinely yours, where they came from, and whether they have been in place long enough to be real.

A study plan that does not add up. If you have a bachelor's in business and you have applied for a one-year diploma in a lower field, the officer will ask why. Sometimes there is a good answer. If you do not give one, they fill in their own, and the answer they reach is usually that you want to work rather than study.

Weak ties to Bangladesh. Canada does not require you to prove you will leave, but the officer is assessing whether your overall story is a study story. Family, property, a job to return to, ongoing responsibilities, all of it helps.

There is no appeal you can file against a refusal from outside Canada. You reapply, and only new evidence changes the outcome.

Who Canada actually suits

Students with genuinely available funds at that level, with an academic record that matches the programme they have chosen, who want the post-graduation work and residency pathway and are planning around it rather than hoping for it.

If that is not you yet, it may be you in two years. Plenty of our students do a diploma or a bachelor's in Malaysia, build a record and some savings, and apply to Canada for a master's from a much stronger position.

Before you apply

Get your DLI confirmed, your funds in place and seasoned, and your study plan written so the progression from what you have studied to what you want to study is obvious to a stranger reading it in four minutes.

The proof-of-funds figures above come from the Canadian government and were checked in October 2026. Canada has revised this amount before, sometimes sharply, so message us on WhatsApp before you move any money and we will confirm the current requirement for your intake.
