Why Germany
Public universities charge no tuition, or only a small semester fee. Add strong engineering, IT and science programs, a big economy that hires graduates, and more English-taught master's every year, and the value speaks for itself.
Is it really free?
At public universities, pretty much. You pay a modest semester fee that often includes local transport, and that's it for tuition. Private universities do charge. The real money goes on living, which you also have to prove to get the visa.
The real cost
Budget for living and for the blocked account the visa requires, roughly a year's expenses parked in advance. Tuition itself barely registers at public universities, which is what makes Germany one of the cheapest places to earn a degree, as long as you plan the living side honestly.
Getting in
- A recognised HSC, sometimes plus a Studienkolleg (foundation year) or a year of university already done, depending on the course.
- IELTS around 6.5 for English-taught programs, or German for the German-taught ones.
- An APS certificate, an academic check students from several countries have to clear. We'll tell you whether it applies to you.
Universities and courses
Germany's public system runs deep, with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Heidelberg University near the top. Engineering, computer science, data science and the natural sciences are the strong suits, and English-taught master's keep multiplying.

- Work out your route in, direct entry or foundation year, and whether you need the APS.
- Prep transcripts, English or German proof, SOP and CV.
- Apply (some universities go through a central portal), then secure admission.
- Open the blocked account, then lodge the visa.
