Study in Italy from Bangladesh: How DSU Regional Scholarships Work

Italy is one of the few places where a student from a middle-income Bangladeshi family can end up paying very little to attend a serious university. The reason is a system called DSU, and it is badly understood here because it works nothing like a merit scholarship.

Two separate things you are applying for

Keep these apart in your head, because mixing them up is the most common mistake.

The first is admission to the university. That is academic, it runs on your transcripts and sometimes an entrance test, and it is the part you are used to.

The second is DSU, the right-to-study benefit. It is run by a regional body, not by the university, and it is assessed mainly on your family's financial situation rather than your grades. Lombardy, Tuscany, Lazio and the rest each run their own scheme with their own deadlines and their own forms. Politecnico di Milano, Pisa and Insubria all publish their own DSU calls, and the details differ between them.

You apply for both. Separately. On different deadlines.

What DSU can cover

At the stronger end, a DSU award can mean exemption from tuition, a cash maintenance grant paid across the year, subsidised or free canteen meals, and a place in student housing. That combination is why students talk about studying in Italy "for free", which is an overstatement but not a wild one.

Public university tuition in Italy is modest to begin with, and it is often banded by family income, so even without a full DSU award many students pay far less than the headline fee.

The part that catches Bangladeshi applicants

DSU is means-tested, and Italy assesses means through a financial declaration. For a family in Italy that is a standard domestic calculation. For a family in Bangladesh, it means producing official documents about your household income and assets, translated, legalised, and issued by bodies the Italian authorities will accept.

This is the step that sinks applications. Not the grades, the paperwork. Income certificates, property and asset documentation, family composition, all in the right format, often needing attestation and consular legalisation, and all of it against a deadline set in Italy rather than in Dhaka.

Start this months before you think you need to. The certificate itself might take a week; getting it translated, attested and legalised is what eats the calendar.

Language

Plenty of degrees are taught in English, particularly at master's level and in engineering, design and economics. You can complete a full degree without Italian.

You will still want some Italian for daily life, and for part-time work it stops being optional. Bureaucracy in Italy is not gentle to people who cannot read the forms.

Is it right for you

Italy suits students whose families genuinely cannot fund a UK or Canada budget, who have decent but not spectacular grades, and who are organised enough to run a document-heavy process on someone else's timetable.

It suits impatient students badly. Everything takes longer than you expect, from visa appointments to the residence permit after you land.

Practical order of operations

Pick the region first, not just the university, because the DSU rules and deadlines belong to the region. Check that region's call for applications for the coming year. Work backwards from its deadline to when your income documents need to be requested, and start collecting immediately. Apply for admission in parallel.

The DSU calls are republished every year with revised income thresholds and award amounts, which is exactly why we are not printing numbers here. Message us on WhatsApp with the region and course you are considering and we will go through the current call with you.
