Study in South Korea from Bangladesh: GKS and Self-Funded Routes

Korea gets overlooked here, which is odd given what is on offer. The government runs one of the more generous scholarship programmes available to Bangladeshi students, the universities are strong in engineering and technology, and you are competing against a far smaller field than you would be for a UK place.

The Global Korea Scholarship

GKS is administered by NIIED, Korea's national institute for international education. At full award it covers tuition, a monthly living allowance, airfare, medical insurance and a year of Korean language training before your degree starts.

Like Japan's MEXT, it runs on two tracks. The embassy track, where you apply through the Korean embassy and are assessed against other applicants from Bangladesh. And the university track, where you apply directly to a participating Korean university that nominates you.

The embassy track has country quotas, which is the part worth understanding. You are competing against other Bangladeshi applicants rather than against the whole world. That is a meaningfully better position than most scholarship applications you will make.

The university track can be less contested still, depending on the institution, and it lets you target a specific department.

Pick one. You generally cannot run both tracks in the same cycle, and trying is a good way to be disqualified from both.

The language year

GKS normally includes a year of intensive Korean before your degree. Students treat this as a cost. It is closer to a benefit.

You arrive, you spend a year learning the language with your living costs covered, and you start your degree able to function in the country. Compare that with landing in Sydney with a part-time job to find and rent due in a fortnight.

Many graduate programmes are taught in English, and at some universities you can complete a degree without Korean. You will still be living in Korean.

If you are self-funding

Korea is not a budget destination in the way Malaysia is, but it undercuts the UK, Australia and Canada meaningfully once you account for both tuition and living costs, particularly outside Seoul.

Many universities operate their own tuition reduction schemes for international students, often tied to grades, and these are worth asking about directly rather than assuming the published fee is what you pay.

What Korea asks for

Strong, clean academics. Korean admissions read transcripts closely and a patchy record is hard to argue past.

Document discipline. Apostille or consular legalisation of your academic documents is usually required, and the rules are specific. This is another process that takes weeks in Dhaka and cannot be rushed at the end.

A clear reason for choosing Korea. "It is cheaper than the UK" is true and will not win you a scholarship. A specific department, a research area, an industry you want to work in, that is an application.

Who it suits

Engineering, IT and science students with good grades and limited family funds. Students who want a scholarship they can realistically win rather than a lottery ticket. Students genuinely interested in Asia rather than treating it as a consolation prize, because the ones who arrive disappointed tend to struggle.

Before you start

Find the current GKS notice through NIIED or the Korean embassy rather than a third-party summary, and check which track you are eligible for and when it closes.

Quotas, covered items and deadlines change from cycle to cycle, so message us on WhatsApp with your subject and results and we will tell you which track gives you the better odds this year.
